Founded in 2001, ERRIN is a Brussels-based platform of Research and Innovation Organisations and Stakeholders in Regions. ERRIN aims to strengthen regional Research and Innovation capacities by exchanging information, sharing best practice, supporting Europeanproject development, policy shaping and profile raising by working together with a partnership approach.
This workshop held on 21st October, jointly organised by EPIC, ERRIN and Photonics21, was linked to the Day of Photonics and outlined future EU policy on photonics and examined how industrial and regional stakeholders can support photonics and its contribution to economic growth. Regions with photonics as a smart specialisation priority presented their strategies and their implementation actions. These presentations led to the panel and participants identifying the future needs of photonics industries. One of the talks was given by Prof Hugo Thienpont about how ACTPHAST is working with regional clusters across the EU to promote this unique solution for access to photonics innovation support from Europe's leading research institutions to European companies, especially SMEs.
The workshop was therefore of particular interest to regional stakeholders involved in policy making, smart specialisation strategies, cluster policies, innovation strategies as well as all levels of the photonics industry. The workshop was an opportunity to gain first hand knowledge of current policies in photonics, meet potential partners for future photonics projects at the EU level and discuss future funding opportunities for SMEs.
