Warsaw University of Technology - Institute of Micromechanics and Photonics (IMiF), Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics (IMiO) and Division of Optics (DO)

WUT is a research intense, doctoral level academic institution focused on undergraduate and graduate programs almost exclusively in engineering and applied sciences. With over 30 000 students served by over 2500 professors and instructors within 17 faculties, Warsaw University of Technology is the largest and the highest ranked engineering university in Poland. ACTPHAST will benefit from the contribution of three WUT teams, which are closely cooperating on the complementary topics of optics and photonics for many years and represent the strongest research grouping in photonics in Poland, namely: the Institute of Micromechanics and Photonics – IMiF (from Mechatronics Faculty), the Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics – IMiO (from Electronics and Information Technology Faculty) and Division of Optics- DoF (from Physics Faculty).

The photonics teams at WUT hosts 8 full professor, 12 senior post-docs, 30 researchers and more than 40 PhD students. All three teams are internationally recognized for fundamental and applied research in the field of photonics devices and materials, optical metrology, fibre optics, optoelectronics and image processing. WUT has solid relations with industry and with companies driving recent extensive investments in optics and photonics in Poland.

The photonics teams have been for more than 30 years involved in several industrially oriented research projects and direct cooperation with industry incl. infrared devices (Polish Optical Centre, Vigo Systems), fibre optics sensors and telecommunication) (ORLEN, Telekomunikacja Polska S.A.) measurements and monitoring (Royce Rolls, British Gas, Volksvagen Foundation, Electric Power Stations, Energodiagnostyka Ltd.), multimedia (Helwet Packard, Polish Television, Samsung, aSTORY Ltd., Holography-Polska), art archiving (numerous museums in Poland). Within last 10 years five successful SMEs in photonics and applications have from been created from these teams.
